Federal BOP Release Destinations
A BOP release entry marks an event in federal prison custody. It does not by itself establish that all federal obligations ended. A person may return to the community, enter supervision, move through a Residential Reentry Management placement, or become subject to another sovereign's custody.
A Macon County jail departure does not create a BOP record unless federal imprisonment was involved. A person taken on a federal writ or detainer may instead be in U.S. Marshals custody before sentencing. State custody, immigration custody, and community placement also fall outside a simple BOP institution result.
Confirm a Federal BOP Release
The BOP locator searches by register number or by name with age, race, and sex disambiguators. The register number is the clearest route when known.
- Open the official BOP Inmate Locator.
- Search by register number, or use name and the available descriptors.
- Compare the public fields before selecting a result.
- Read the status and release date exactly as displayed.
- Use the federal docket or responsible agency when BOP status does not answer the next-custodian question.
The Macon County release search explains how to move between the county, NC DAC, federal, and immigration systems.
Federal BOP Release Record Fields
A former federal inmate result typically retains a compact set of identity and release fields. Older data can have limits, and sentence information can change after computation.
| Locator field | Use |
|---|---|
| Name and register number | Identify the federal incarceration record. |
| Age, race, and sex | Disambiguate similar names using only displayed data. |
| Institution or status | Shows current BOP placement or the word Released. |
| Release date | Reports the BOP release event in the agency's record. |
Use the listed date as the agency record, not as a promise made before the event. If a result states Released, that supports a BOP custody conclusion. It does not rule out later ICE, state, or other custody.
Federal BOP Release Records Contact
The locator and its official FAQ are the first public channels. When a sentence or release entry appears wrong, preserve the register number, exact field wording, and source court record before asking BOP which office holds the underlying record.
For a federal prosecution, the court docket and defense counsel can establish orders that the locator does not explain. A prison release date and a sentencing judgment are related records, not substitutes.
Federal BOP Historical Release Search
The BOP locator is useful after release because former inmates commonly remain searchable. The official federal locator is the controlling source for this historical BOP status.

The search page supports a federal prison lookup, not a Macon County jail roster. Confirm the register number before connecting a result to a local case.
When No Federal BOP Release Record Appears
Not being in BOP custody is broader than being free in Macon County. Federal defendants may be in USMS pretrial custody, a contract jail, an RRM placement, state custody, immigration custody, or the community. USMS has no open nationwide person locator equivalent to BOP.
Use the federal docket to identify the responsible agency and current order. Ask counsel or that agency for the next step. If the Macon jail event lists a federal transfer, request the receiving agency rather than assuming BOP took immediate control.
Reconcile Federal BOP Release Records
BOP controls its incarceration record, the federal court controls filed orders, and USMS controls its prisoner operations. ICE controls civil immigration detention. When dates differ, label each one by custodian and event rather than forcing them into one timeline.
A BOP release field can reflect a transition involving an RRM. A federal court order can predate physical movement. Obtain two-source confirmation when the receiving custody or supervision status matters.
Macon Jail and Federal BOP Release Records
The Macon County Detention Center remains the source for its own booking end. If the sheriff record says transfer to federal custody, that is evidence that the local booking ended and federal responsibility began. It is not a BOP release.
Later, a BOP Released result can establish the federal prison event. Keep the county release code, federal admission, federal release, and any supervision as separate stages. This avoids turning a custodial transfer into an unsupported community-release claim.
A federal docket can also show whether the case ended in dismissal, judgment, detention, or another order, but the clerk's filing does not replace BOP's physical custody event. When a release date is disputed, save the locator result and compare it with the specific filed order. Ask the office responsible for each record to explain its own field. This source-by-source method is more reliable than treating the latest date on any page as a complete account of federal custody. If the locator contains an older record, review the BOP warning about historical-data limits before drawing a broad conclusion. A sentence can also change after agency computation. Use the published status for the BOP event and obtain the present record when the question concerns current placement or supervision.
Federal BOP Register Number Release Search
The locator's number search is preferable when a BOP register number is already known. It avoids many name matches and links the result to the agency's federal incarceration record. When only a name is available, use age, race, and sex fields solely to disambiguate the public result. A match should not be connected to a Macon County case until the docket, judgment, or another source supports the connection.
A displayed institution indicates BOP placement at the time reflected by the record. The word Released with a date commonly remains after federal imprisonment ends. Preserve the exact date and status instead of rephrasing it as completion of every sentence condition. The locator does not establish whether federal supervision, immigration custody, or another sovereign's custody followed.
Federal BOP Release and RRM Records
Federal placement can involve Residential Reentry Management. A transition involving an RRM can affect how a BOP location or release field should be understood. It is still a federal system event and should not be equated with a door-out time at Macon County Detention Center. Read the BOP field literally and use the responsible office or federal docket when the placement requires more detail.
The research does not identify a federal institution or RRM in Macon County. A local address should not be invented from a national locator result. If a result names a placement, verify it through official BOP information before describing the person's physical location.
Federal Court and BOP Release Records
The federal court file can contain detention orders, judgments, sentence changes, and later orders. Those documents explain legal authority, while BOP controls the prison admission and release record. A court order may precede the agency's physical movement, so the dates can legitimately differ.
For a specific discrepancy, identify the docket entry and the BOP register number. Ask each custodian about its own event. Defense counsel can also help identify whether USMS, BOP, or another agency currently controls the person. Do not use a BOP no-result as proof that no federal case or custody exists.
Older Federal BOP Release Records
BOP warns that older locator data can have limitations. Historical entries are valuable, but a missing or sparse record should be described narrowly. Search spelling variants only when supported, compare the public descriptors, and use the federal docket for confirmation.
If the locator date conflicts with a later sentence modification, seek the current BOP record. A published date reflects the agency information presented at the time of the check. It should not be converted into an unsourced account of why release occurred or whether every legal obligation ended.
Federal BOP Custody Continuity Records
Federal custody can pass through USMS, a contract jail, BOP, an RRM placement, and another agency. The BOP locator covers only the BOP portion. For a Macon County starting point, preserve the sheriff's transfer code and receiving agency, then identify the federal case. A later BOP register number helps connect the prison record, but it should not be projected backward onto a local booking without supporting documents.
If ICE custody is possible after BOP release, use the ICE current locator and responsible field office. If state custody follows, use that state's official correctional source. A BOP Released result remains valid evidence of the BOP event even when another custodian immediately follows. The accurate description is that federal prison custody ended on the date BOP reports, with the next status verified separately.
This distinction also applies to federal supervision. The locator does not certify that all supervision ended. The federal docket, U.S. Probation information available through the case, or counsel may be needed for that question. Avoid turning a prison release field into a statement about every remaining condition.
